چکیده

Unlike other tissues, neural tissue is known to retain a constant number of neurons, throughout the life span. But during development, cell death is normally known to occur (4,6 , 7) and supernumerary cells are eliminated. An exception to this rule has been found in a pathological condition , and in this report evidence is presented of increased numbers of alpha motor neurons in the spinal cord of dystrophic chicken of line 307, Dystrophic chicken of line 307 have a heritable type of muscular dystrophy in which muscle weakness, especially that of the flight muscles, appear most prominent. As a result, the bird is unable to raise its wings or

Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular disorder characterized by degeneration of alpha motor neurons resulting in hypotonia, progressive muscular weakness and atrophy.30 Spinal muscular atrophy is one of the leading hereditary causes of infant mortality,31 it comprises the second most common fatal progressive diseases after cystic fibrosis.28 Spinal muscular atrophy is the most common...

Aberrant glycosylation of alpha-dystroglycan causes defective binding of laminin in the muscle of chicken muscular dystrophy.

Dystroglycan is a central component of dystrophin-glycoprotein complex that links extracellular matrix and cytoskeleton in skeletal muscle. Although dystrophic chicken is well established as an animal model of human muscular dystrophy, the pathomechanism leading to muscular degeneration remains unknown. We show here that glycosylation and laminin-binding activity of alpha-dystroglycan (alpha-DG...

Muscle carbonic anhydrase III levels in normal and muscular dystrophia afflicted chickens

BACKGROUND The levels and immunohistochemical localization of muscle carbonic anhydrase III (CA-III) in healthy chickens and in muscular dystrophia affected (DA) chickens show that the muscles of diseased animal undergo a progressive increase of enzyme activity. METHODS An enzyme-linked immunoassay was used to assess the CA-III levels in the muscles and other tissues from eight normal White L...

Hyperleptinemia in children with autosomal recessive spinal muscular atrophy type I-III

BACKGROUND Autosomal-recessive proximal spinal muscular atrophies (SMA) are disorders characterized by a ubiquitous deficiency of the survival of motor neuron protein that leads to a multisystemic disorder, which mostly affects alpha motor neurons. Disease progression is clinically associated with failure to thrive or weight loss, mainly caused by chewing and swallowing difficulties. Although p...

Association of Limb-Girdle muscular dystrophy with multiple sclerosis: A case report

Background: The association of limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) with other neurological disorders is uncommon. Case presentation: We report a 25-year-old female with LGMD who suffered from slowly progressive proximal muscular weakness and atrophy since she was 12 years of age. The patient recently presented with acute loss of left side visual acuity. After evaluation, findings were sugges...
